The Quake Materia in Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Reunion is arguably one of the best Materia pieces in the entire game. When used in the correct circumstance, it can decimate huge enemy numbers. It can be a great item to have during the late game, but it can also be obtained shortly into the game’s story if the player is willing to work for it.
What Does The Quake Materia Do?
When activated, the Quake Materia creates a shockwave that surrounds Zack and deals damage to all enemies who happen to be in range. It’s arguably one of the strongest abilities Zack can learn throughout his quest, but it isn’t perfect. As an earth-based attack, it is unable to hit flying enemies, so Zack will need to rely on something else in his arsenal to deal with airborne foes.

Thankfully, Crisis Core features more grounded enemies than airborne ones, so players will find Quake extremely useful for most of the battles they engage in. It’s especially helpful to have during the first few chapters, as it will devastate most of the game’s enemies, and often kill them if their health is low enough. Though it costs 58 MP to cast, it’s almost always guaranteed to kill its targets in one use, which is a bargain.
How To Find The Quake Materia
The Quake Materia can be found quite early into Crisis Core if the player is willing to complete Zack’s missions. To gain access to it, Zack must complete the mission entitled M4-2-6: The Five Saints of Wutai. Unlike most of the previous missions, completing The Five Saints of Wutai requires Zack to defeat five challenging minibosses, each of whom has unique abilities. It can be a struggle to beat these foes if Zack is under-leveled, but it is possible with the right Materia set-up.
By the time Zack unlocks the option to face the Five Saints (also known as the Crescent Unit), he should be at a comfortable level. If not, the Materia Fusion menu can make up the difference with the right Materia combination. The Dark Firaga Materia can be a big help against these foes, especially thanks to its damage output and speed. If cast fast enough, the Five Saints will be stunned, permitting the player ample time to deal some damage.
Unlocking The Wutai Secret Shop
Once the Five Saints have all been defeated, Zack will gain access to the Wutai Secret Shop, from which he can purchase the Quake Materia for 18,000 Gil. It’s one of the most expensive Materia available here, which makes sense considering how powerful it is. To equip Quake, the player must select “Equipment” in the pause menu and assign the Materia to whatever button they prefer.
If the player has amassed a decent amount of Gil during their playthrough, they should also consider buying the Hell Firaga, Hell Blizzaga, and Hell Thundaga spells located just below Quake in the Wutai Secret Shop, as these spells can inflict some truly devastating status effects. They can also make up for Quake’s inability to hit airborne enemies, making them convenient substitutes.
For those who wish to bypass the missions, Quake can also be obtained through Materia Fusion. When the Darkness Materia is combined with a fully maxed Materia like Cure, a Quake Materia will be created. Finding the necessary materials to create Quake requires some dedication, and though The Five Saints of Wutai quest is no calk walk, it takes slightly less work.
