Aside from his iconic Buster Sword, Zack must rely on Materia to complete his adventure. He can obtain all manner of different types while progressing through the story, but one of the best Materia he can obtain is the Costly Punch Command Materia. This piece of Materia is a necessity for anyone hoping to take on Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Reunion’s post-game and optional content.
What Costly Punch Does
The Costly Punch Command Materia is arguably one of the most powerful pieces of equipment Zack can obtain on his journey. When equipped, the player can activate it to dish out some extremely high levels of damage. The damage dealt depends on how much HP Zack has. The higher Zack’s HP, the higher his damage output will be.
With high enough stats, Zack can deal 9,999 points of damage per hit when using Costly punch. To increase it, an accessory that breaks Zack’s damage limit must be equipped.
The Brutal accessory, obtained by completing the M7-4-6: Breakthrough mission, will break Zack’s damage limit. Unlike other damage-breaking accessories, the Brutal accessory can be obtained quite easily, so long as Zack has reached a high enough level to complete Rank Seven missions.
Once the damage limit has been broken, Zack will be able to use Costly Punch to inflict 99,999 points of damage, but it comes at a price. Activating Costly Punch will deplete a small portion of Zack’s HP in exchange, which can quickly leave his HP quite low if the player isn’t careful. Though using Costly Punch can be quite risky during certain battles, the damage it dishes out usually makes it worth the risk.
Where To Find Costly Punch
The most straightforward way to obtain the Costly Punch Command Materia is to initiate the M9-5-4: Abnormal Power mission and search each of the chests scattered throughout the area. If the player has not yet unlocked this mission (or is underleveled), they can also steal the Costly Punch Materia from Ifrit in M9-5-1: Hojo’s Monsters. Defeating Ifrit will grant Zack another Brutal Materia, which can be quite handy if the player has yet to complete M7-4-6: Breakthrough.
The easiest way to obtain Costly Punch, however, is through Materia Fusion. By simply combining a Goblin Punch Materia with a DMW Limit Break Materia, the Costly Punch Materia will be created. As if this wasn’t simple enough, neither Materia needs to be leveled for the Materia Fusion to work.
To obtain a Goblin Punch Command Materia, Zack can steal one from the Vajradhara Kumbhira miniboss during the M4-4-4: Wutai in the Slums mission. It can also be found by completing 55% of all the missions, but stealing it is much less time-consuming.
