RELATED: Final Fantasy 7: The Best Zack Fair Cosplays We’ve Ever Seen
Not only does Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Reunion feature some new characters, but it’s also littered with new items and Materia. The Darkness Materia has appeared several times throughout the Final Fantasy series, but it was absent from Final Fantasy 7. Fans who enjoyed using the ability in the series’ other installments will also enjoy using it in Crisis Core, once they eventually find it.
What Does The Darkness Materia Do?
While most of the Materia in Crisis Core can be activated in exchange for some MP, the Darkness Materia requires Zack to sacrifice a portion of his HP instead. By sacrificing his health, he can deal out some significant damage to his enemies, but it’s a risky move and should only really be used in dire situations or when the player is confident the damage won’t hinder them too much.
The more the Darkness Materia is leveled up, the higher Zack’s HP will become, which is a nice bonus considering how dangerous Darkness can be. Those who wish to risk it all in Crisis Core can do so by obtaining the Darkness Materia and incorporating it into their fighting style.
Death Wish For Zack (First Darkness Materia)
The Darkness Materia is a powerful piece of equipment, so it makes sense that, for it to be obtained, the player needs to prove themselves worthy. One way to claim it is for Zack to complete the M4-4-2: Death Wish for Zack mission found in The Remnants Strike Again section of the mission menu.
Completing this quest is easier said than done; however, as it’s a Rank 7 mission. The random encounters plaguing this mission can be quite difficult if Zack’s level is low, but they can all be easily avoided by hugging the area’s walls. Doing so will ensure Zack stays out of the area’s combat zones, permitting him to collect the two treasure chests and face the Vajradhaja Karura miniboss without interference. If the player is struggling the finish this mission, the Dark Firaga spell can be a great way to deal good damage from a safe distance.
The Suspicious Mail (Second Darkness Materia)
The Darkness Materia can be sourced from several places in Crisis Core, but the next best way to obtain it is to complete the M8-4-6: Suspicious Mail 6 mission. Like Death Wish for Zack, players can hug the outer edges of the cave system to avoid any unwanted enemy encounters.
After opening the three treasure chests spread throughout the cave, Zack can approach the Dual Horn. Like before, the Dark Firaga Materia allows him to inflict some decent damage while maintaining his distance. Once the battle is over, he will be awarded another Darkness Materia.
Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Reunion is available now on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Switch, and PC.
